Small Business Marketing
The No. 1 mistake business owners make with their small business marketing is they try to copy the marketing put out there by big business.
This is a mistake for 3 reasons:
- 1.
- Big business has more money than you do. They have a marketing budget they get to spend regardless of results. Small business marketing cannot operate the same way, not if you want to stay in business.
- 2.
- The guy who decides on the marketing strategy is on a salary. He gets paid whether the marketing works or not. There is no real pressure on him or her to get results. You don’t have that luxury. You need to be running marketing campaigns that go out on Monday and translate to money in your pocket by the weekend.
- 3.
- 3. Many big businesses have a brand, and in some cases there is some justification in them marketing for “brand awareness”. But you, as a small business marketing yourself should avoid this kind of thing with great zeal. Your brand will come as a by-product of giving great service and selling fabulous products. It comes after the fact of you having a successful business. If you do “brand” or “image” advertising in your small business marketing, then you are doomed.
All small business marketing must be direct marketing -- it goes out and has a specific offer calling for a clear action to be taken in a short time period. It should always contain strong copy (usually long), and needs to be personal from you to me, not written in the stuffy and formal voice of the anonymous corporation.
Get it right, pay attention to what you’re doing, and stick with the fundamentals, and your marketing will completely outstrip even your largest competitors’ no matter how big their budgets are.
